Eska’s makeup is really pretty.

So, I know Bolin is allegedly going to have a “strange romance” or something in Book 2, but what if…

Mako is still a brother-betrayer, jerkbending jerkbender? :I

Ah, yes, I reblogged it a bit without criticism earlier, but now I do notice the wording “steal/claim” and it’s rather unfortunate, as it implies lack of agency on Eska’s part and objectifies her in a way. However, I still agree that Mako has a very dominant controlling trait and, due to how he grew up, is attracted (romantically or not) to people he can protect. This is not hate on my part, it’s an observation. They might fall out with Korra because of how independent she wants to be and how he’s frustrated over feeling she’s not allowing him to protect her (EDIT: I feel like my own wording is unfortunate in this moment, so a brief explanation. I DO NOT fault Korra on being independent. I want to notice that his protectiveness and her willingness to protect herself are two clashing traits and I predict arguments on this basis). If a woman who gives off an impression of someone in need of help (who might or might not be Eska) happens to appear, he might get attracted to her (whether she chooses to requite it or not is a different story). Hell, she might even not give such an impression, it’s a matter of whether he deems her weaker than himself. Though, seeing as Korra and him is rather obvious endgame, they will probably overcome it. The big question is how: by Mako (and Korra too!) experiencing some character development at last, or by forced plot twists like in season one.

*shrug* This comes down to different character interpretations. I really just don’t see Mako that way, like at all. I kinda feel like we’re watching different shows here. But everyone is gonna interpret differently.

LoK Theory: Mako is Still A Bad Idea

You know what I’m saying.  Mako is totally gonna steal/claim Eska.  Him and Korra are starting off the season as “rocky.”  I kind of think Korra is too strong for Mako and he’d prefer a woman he can “protect.”  Hence why  he became interested in Korra when she was kidnapped, because she needed help; and why he confessed his love to Korra when she lost her bending, she was “weak” at that point.

Essentially, to me, Mako is a control-freak who justifies it by being the “knight in shining armor.”

While I don’t know Eska’s personality, yet, it seems to me she’ll be much less boisterous than Korra and, to Mako, that could translate as “weaker” and “in need of a knight.”

Um wow y’all I don’t even care about Mako that much, but it seems like you’re reaching to find ways to hate him.

Honestly I thought he was attracted to Korra because she was stronger than him. I think he’s had to grow up too fast and spent his whole life having to be responsible for both himself and Bolin, and sometimes it’s kind of a relief to let someone else take the wheel.

I think he protected Korra because he’s used to having to fight tooth and nail to protect those he cares about. Being responsible != attracted to weakness.

When he saw Korra had gotten her own damn bending back, he looked happy for her. Awed, even. Not angry or disappointed.

And um that whole thing where Eska is apparently a prize for men to claim with the additional kind of gross implication of Bolin trying to “get his” (because the universe owes him pussy or something IDK) and Mako can “steal her” because she left her free will in her other bra today….yeah nah let’s not.

After editing Korra in Asami’s makeup, I got curious how the rest of the Krew would look.

Can we just pause for a second and appreciate how resilient Mako and Bolin are? They grew up on the streets, alone, with no parents, and had to get involved in a gang just to stay alive. But Mako hasn’t given on getting his brother a better future. Bolin is still optimistic and cheerful. They didn’t let their troubles crush them, even thought it shaped them in different ways.

That’s why I usually roll my eyes at villains with ~sympathetic~ backstroies. A lot of people go through the same shit, sometimes worse, and they don’t end up killing everything in their path. Unless they’re the victim of something really sick or manipulated or just ground into the dust in the most tragic way possible, villains don’t really pull my heartstrings.

Okay can we talk about this for a minute.

Mako and Bolin surviving through adversity is admirable! I wish we’d seen more of what they’d had to go through in canon, but believe me, I identify with it. Homelessness and having to resort to crime to eat are things I have personal experience with—even in childhood. The first time I became homeless I was eleven. While I did end up being taken in by relatives and later friends at that point, it wasn’t all roses, you know?

And if you come out of that bitter and angry instead of optimistic and cheerful, it isn’t a moral failing on your part. Bolin is true to himself, and that’s wonderful, he should do that. By being bitter and angry about my experiences, I’m true to myself. The goal of surviving being poor is to SURVIVE, it’s not to fake never having been poor.

People cope with trauma in different ways, and make no mistake, what Mako and Bolin went through is a form of trauma. Just because they have a more socially acceptable form of coping, doesn’t mean we should condemn those who cope in less pretty ways. I’m actually really drawn to narratives of people who have uglier, more troubled reactions to trauma, because I think these are important too. I think we need to hear sometimes that if you can’t come out of some painful experience smiling, it isn’t that there’s something wrong with you, it isn’t that you did your own trauma wrong.

There isn’t just one story for survivors.
